About

Martin Rimmer is Founder and Managing Director of Spice Taxation, an independent UK personal tax practice based in Singapore. A Fellow of the Association of Taxation Technicians in the UK (membership 114900), he has been a UK tax adviser since 1997.

Martin read German with International Business at the University of Surrey, with subsidiary French, graduating in June 1995. He began his tax career in 1997 at Arthur Andersen in London, in the firm’s International Human Capital Services division, advising UK and US expatriate clients. In 1999 he moved to The Fry Group in the UK as Tax Technical Manager, and in August 2011 he relocated to Singapore to lead the firm’s tax practice across Asia Pacific. In Singapore he built a client base of British expatriates and returning residents across Singapore, Hong Kong and the wider region.

In 2018 Martin joined St James’s Place (Singapore) Pte Ltd as Head of Tax for its Asia partner practice Select Investors. He established Spice Taxation Pte Ltd on 1 September 2021, and the firm began trading on 1 January 2022. Its sister firm, Spice Advisory, was set up as an LLP in autumn 2021 with former Ernst & Young consulting partner Mark Buchan, and converted to a Pte Ltd in 2026. Spice Taxation operates entirely independently of financial advisers, insurance agents and property consultants, so clients receive tax advice that is free of third-party interests.

Martin is one of the UK’s leading UK tax advisers, with vast and credentialed experience in the international aspects of UK personal taxation. Over the last 25 years or so he has helped many thousands of families with their tax planning and compliance, whether they are British tax residents, expatriates, foreign nationals with UK assets or people returning to the UK.

Martin is a member of Singapore Chartered Tax Professionals. He writes tax commentary for Spice Taxation clients and the wider Singapore expat community, including the firm’s post-Budget updates published through the British Chamber of Commerce, and has contributed to BCCJ Acumen in Japan and the multi-author guide The Divorce Journey for British Expats in Singapore. He has been resident in Singapore since 2011 and is a Singapore Permanent Resident.

In his own words: “At the heart of my client work is a desire to make and keep things simple and to break down what can be complex choices about tax law into relatable, intuitive and sensible planning steps that clients understand. I love my work and I know that it can make a very real difference to people’s lives.” He adds: “Ultimately, no-one does their tax planning because it is fun! We do it to save money and create financial security. However, tax planning by itself isn’t enough. It only really has meaning if it is part of a sound long term plan for your financial well-being.”

Outside work, Martin is a classically trained pianist, a self-taught guitarist and songwriter, and a committed Christian who worships at St George’s Church in Dempsey.
